My first proper Earthquake!

Last night at 3.07am was woken to everything moving, bedroom cupboard door rattling and general WTF moment! This is my first really quake, the previous one I had felt while I was offshore in Qatar, but thought that was just the crane driver being a bit rough with a load landing. Last nights was different, the whole place was shaking and lying it bed it felt really weird last a good 20+ seconds I would have guessed. Turns out it was a Magnitude 6.6, located around 48Km WNW of Polis, off the west coast of Cyprus. At least no damage here and everyone fine. Eldest daughter thought it was 'so cool', think that was her first experience of one as well. Full details can be found at: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000gaqu/executive

Roof Repairs, tripping circuits.........

When the winter rains came, we had the usual drops of water in the fireplace.

This year however, there was a river flowing out of the fireplace and needed to put towels down to contain it.

I knew there was an issue on the roof, as last year, I went up and checked and there was a small cracked tile, but it wan't that big and wasn't really in a position to cause much of a problem. I? had mentioned it to the land lord, and one his guys had taken a look at it. This year it was bad, a whole lot worse.

To get onto the roof, you have to go through the loft space, and that is first where you can see the wet in the concrete, and you can also see the water mark on the roofing boards.

Heading out onto the roof, I can see where someone has previously covered over the cracks with ridge tiles:

Removing the ridge tiles, it clearly showed where the problem lies, big holes in the underlying tiles. with water running down the tiles, this is easily going to go into the roof space, particularly the hole in the trough at the lower middle area.

I removed all the temporary covering tiles, and also removed the broken ones. I managed to find spare tiles in amongst the surplus building materials that are stored in another part of the house as well as in the main loft, and these were easy to fit as they are just slotted in by pulling up the tile above and sliding in until they interlock.

Much better, at least that is one problem fixed. There was another area in the kitchen and utility room  where the walls get damp. I checked the roof above it and a drainage hole was blocked by bird nest and muck. Cleaned that out, so hopefully that should also help. There is also some pipes for the aircon unit that go through a penetration, which I think the water is going down. Can't seal it up until it is dried thoroughly, but having cleaned the muck out, it should help reduce the water pooling and backing up.

There is a socket in the kitchen that this water seams to find its way into, and it keeps tripping the electrics during the heavy rains. I opened up the socket and it was heavily corroded inside and the water was coming out the plug holes.

I replaced the socket with a new one, and hopefully with having cleared the drain hole and also fitting the new socket, this should help stop the power tripping for a while. We haven't had another trip so far since. So fingers crossed.
