My first proper Earthquake!

Last night at 3.07am was woken to everything moving, bedroom cupboard door rattling and general WTF moment! This is my first really quake, the previous one I had felt while I was offshore in Qatar, but thought that was just the crane driver being a bit rough with a load landing. Last nights was different, the whole place was shaking and lying it bed it felt really weird last a good 20+ seconds I would have guessed. Turns out it was a Magnitude 6.6, located around 48Km WNW of Polis, off the west coast of Cyprus. At least no damage here and everyone fine. Eldest daughter thought it was 'so cool', think that was her first experience of one as well. Full details can be found at: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000gaqu/executive

Into the light I command thee! No, not you Hornets!

I was doing a round of light fitting glass cleaning and light bulb changing and in my daughters bedroom was where I discovered a rather strange nest, inside the fitting stuck to the light bulb!

Not sure if there were critters inside or not, I was a bit wary. Being stood on the top of a stepladder, in near darkness doesn't leave a lot of room to run if startled by 'something' coming out of it.

First up was to grab a can of insect spray, gave it a scoosh and then waited to see if there was a reaction after a few minutes.

Next was a poke with a sharp screwdriver. The bottom part of the nest crumbled away, leaving a dried out chrysalis hanging there. So, it looks like whatever was there has moved out.

I proceeded to chip away the rest of the dried nest, and then replace the lamp.

Going by the size of the hole, I figured it might have been hornets, so did an image search on Google for Hornet Chrysalis and sure enough the results came back to the dried out thing inside.

Hopefully they wont be back now!
